How do you run Hermes Agent on your computer?
Abdul Osama (عبدول أسامة) describes installing Hermes Agent on a Mac or Windows computer and connecting it to a language model. An AI agent is software that uses a language model to help carry out tasks; a language model generates responses and guides the agent’s behavior.
“The language model is your agent’s brain.” — Abdul Osama
Setup steps
- Find Hermes Agent, which Abdul describes as an open-source agent you can install locally. Verify the download source: he warns that sites may impersonate Hermes.
- According to his walkthrough, download the DMG installer for Mac or the EXE installer for Windows and follow the usual setup steps. He says you do not need to open a terminal.
- If asked whether to use Hermes tokens, Abdul chooses to bring his own instead.
- Create an account with OpenRouter, a service that provides access to language models through an API. Obtain an API key to connect the agent to a model provider. An API key is a sensitive access credential; do not share it.
- Abdul says the agent can switch among models and token providers. He currently favors Kimi and GLM as models and associates GLM with Z.ai. His assessment of their results and cost is a personal preference, not a performance guarantee.
In numbers
- Abdul suggests that a $5 deposit on OpenRouter might last months, depending on usage, under pay-as-you-go billing. It is not a guaranteed cost estimate.
- He says a future video will cover five sources of AI tokens; he does not identify them here.
Background
Some model services offer limited free credit, but availability, terms and prices can change. Abdul compares an API key to a username and password to make the concept approachable. In practice, it is an access credential that should be kept private.
“Nobody will give you tokens free forever.” — Abdul Osama
What to do next: Check the installer’s source and the provider’s current terms, then connect a model using an API key while monitoring usage.
